I really don't know if these are classified as being framed by nature but I couldn't resist putting them up. I haven't done much today as the hubby is off to a gun show and I stayed home because of a nasty cold and homework that has to be done before tomorrow's classes. I took yesterday off to do running with the hubby.

Went to get livestock feed and picked up our truck that has been in the shop for over 5 months. We told the guy to take his time, well, that was a BIG mistake then we get it back and he forgot to take it and get it inspected, so now it has to go back again.

Rain, snow, rain hmmmm

This was the scene out behind the barn looking toward the back of the pastures. Mind you this was a week ago. Today, all we have had is rain and I mean rain, my poor steers were standing in water and even the garage ended up with just about an inch or more of water. Not fun. But it is what it is.

Not much on the farm that is changing. Still get up do the chores and head off to school. The hubby did tell me he heard that a raccoon was shot up on the college campus after I had left for the day. Someone had reported that they saw a large cat and I mean lion size. Ended up being a 25 pound coon instead and the campus security cop shot it. Why does this happen after I leave ;(

We did it, we got our cat high on cat nip! She just goes crazy over the stuff. She is the only cat in the house among two dogs and she is lucky because she is aloud in the living room and the dogs are not, so that is the only place we can spoil her without the dogs feeling left out of the mix!

School has officially began and boy do I have my work cut out for me. I have five classes this semester instead of only four and I think after this semester if I make it through it, I will have to go back down to only four. I have on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, English 1, Introduction to Economics, then Algebra. On Tuesday and Thursday I have Math of Business Finance and Marketing, each class is one hour and a half long then on Tuesday only I have Algebra after that and on Thursday after Marketing I get out at 12:25. I have lots of homework! What have I got myself into!!

The hubbies father had surgery Monday and he is doing good and ready to come home already. He had one of his valves replaced in his heart.

This is the drill that the hubby was using down in Louisiana. He had only this little platform to work on and not much room to maneuver!

As you can see all around the drill you had to be careful of where you stepped and moved the drill. Glad the hubby is such a great driller! I will have lots more pictures of Louisiana. Matt's phone took great pictures!

We went to town this morning and when we got back the neighbors had the fire department at their house. We thought someone was hurt and here it was, one of the power lines was down and it was a live wire! First the electric company said that they wouldn't be here until this afternoon, and that was just plain stupid. They did make it up here rather quicker than they said. Our truck's snow plow that we store in the yard was under the wire and it started smoking. Hopefully there is no damage to it. We have three of the darn things. We are going to sell two of them and of course keep one for the truck.

Thursday already

I am glad that Thursday is here and tomorrow it's back to the old grind and reality of home! Boy, I can't wait. I love being with the hubby but I sure miss the animals and home. I have cooked lunch for the guys for a few days this week and I do love to cook for ones who do appreciate it. I did cook my Spicy Cajun Shrimp from the new cookbook that the hubby bought me from down in Louisiana! It was a success, but boy was it spicy. Good thing we like spicy food! Now I will have to try some of the other recipes out of the book.

Caught up on my reading as far as my Western Horseman magazines and my horsemanship DVDs. Next week it is back to school. I am actually looking forward to that! Monday it is off to get the school books first and my parking permit, then Tuesday is the actual first day of school for this semester!

Day 2

Still down in the city and just basically being lazy doing the regular household chores for the guys and cooking for them. I made chili and cornbread last night and forgot my cast iron for the corn bread so made do with a cake pan but just didn't taste as good if it would of been made in the cast iron. The hubby always tells me that I should make my chili a little hotter and so this time I added a little extra hot peppers and he sure didn't have a complaint this time, actually, he did. THIS IS HOT! sheese make up my mind would you!

Tonight we are going out to hit my favorite store, (tractor supply)! The hubby needs bigger pants, I keep telling him we both need to go on a diet and that way we would be going to get smaller jeans rather than bigger ones ;) We both decided that we like each other just the way we look so to bad for the rest of the world, cause we don't care what they think!

Here goes again, no pictures for the next few days as I am down in the city with the hubby. I figure with the last three weeks of not seeing him, I will make up for lost time and come spend time with him. He was great and brought me a cookbook from Louisiana. I am even going to make some Spicy Cajun Shrimp (recipe from the book). I am excited about trying some of the recipes out of the book! He brought home some hot sauces too! Next week I will post some of the pictures that he took in New Orleans of the French Quarter!

This is the last week of vacation before I start my second semester of college and I sure hope things go a little easier, even though I have five classes rather than just four! BRING IT ON!! I am ready. (I hope).

It has arrived!

Did I say we had no snow, well I lied, kind of. We were supposed to only get mostly rain and sleet and a little snow but we actually got around 4 inches. Tomorrow we have another storm coming in and calling for another 1 to 3 inches more after it rains first! I just hope the hubby can get home and I hope I can make it to the airport. My truck is still in the shop and my tires are on my car really are not very good and won't make driving in the snow all that good. If I could hibernate in the winter I think I would.

Got my weaving projects done for the family today. All that is left is to do the sewing and package them and I will do that tomorrow. Hope you all have a great evening!

As you can tell by the cows, I think it is still mud season here. One day the ground is hard and the next thing you know it is raining and the ground is muddy again! The horses are even hard to keep clean.

We are supposed to get rain, sleet, snow you name it, we are getting it. I think I would almost prefer snow to all this! I have to say though that I am glad not to be getting what they are up in Alaska! I feel for them up there that is for sure, that I would not wish on my worst enemy (well maybe).

I got a letter in the mail today from the college telling me that I made the Deans List! Not bad for an old lady that has been out of school for 25 years!
I am glad that I went shopping, I now have some new shirts for celebrating!!

Not much going on today, just trying to get the weaving done before Saturday and I am down to two sets of towels out of 5. So, that is progress. I have been getting up on the tread mill doing 2 and a half miles a day. All animals are doing good. Getting close to the time where we have to start pushing the grain to the steers for fattening up and getting them out of the barn to make room for the young steers.

Matt is supposed to fly home this coming Friday. Sounds like the job is all done so he will be home for a while and then soon he will be on his way out to Ohio for another away job. He is bringing a cookbook from down there and that is really awesome. I will have fun trying some of those southern dishes.

I really am beginning to hate these jobs that take him away for weeks on end. I can handle the job of taking care of the farm and the household but I sure do not like being without my best friend beside me. One thing that is good and that is he is working and has a job where a lot of people are not so lucky in that regard.

Another Day

This is actually the sunrise. It almost looks like the sunset. I was on the way back from taking the son to the school to meet the bus for his skiing. I was really wondering if they would even have it as we have had virtually no snow around here that has stuck. He did go though and was disappointed because not much of the mountain was open for skiing. He goes every week for about six weeks through the school. He loves it because he doesn't have to put with any of his classmates that like to be bullies, even though he sticks up for himself and doesn't take any of their crap it still gets to be a pain to have to put up with it. That is why he gave up basketball and baseball, because the other kids were hard to put with.

I did more weaving today and I am making headway on getting the towels done for the family before the get together next weekend. I have a ways to go but I will persevere!

Good news, I received my grades in the mail this week and I have all A's for those of you who don't have me on facebook and didn't know! Connie, over on Far Side, I want to really thank you a lot for your advice and support! My family was also great! My husband has been the best through all the time that the homework has taken away from my time with him. Love you, darlin!

Charlie Brown don't have anything on this tree! The easiest way to take the tree out of the house without all the mess through the whole house is to chop it up in the house and carry out to the stove in a bag! No fuss no muss! The only mess was in the living room. I have to say that it sure is nice to have my living room back without any tree in it. I did add a few of my plants though. I even moved the furniture around a bit. Hope you all have a great evening!

For some reason I am on a family picture marathon! This was taken in August when we went out to see my family. The picture is of the son and I. I think he has grown even taller since this picture was taken. It is not hard to be taller than I. I am only 5.2 and the son is now almost six foot. I am defiantly the short person of the family now! I still tell everyone that good things come in small packages!

Not much really has changed on the farm. We are colder and have just a dusting of snow on the ground and some snow flurries falling. All the animals are the same and of course healthy. I have decided to try to sell Sirocco because of not having the time to train him. Annie of course is fully trained and easy to ride. I would prefer to be able to just saddle and be able to get on and ride without having to worry to much about if I will be getting bucked off when the foot goes into the stirrup. You always have the potential of having problems because they of course are prey animals.

The hubby is still in Louisiana and he does have a plane ticket for the 13th to come home but if he actually gets too is the million dollar question. Lets hope but we will have to just wait and see. He is bragging about how nice it is down there. I keep telling him I don't want to hear about how he is running around in a t-shirt! I just make sure he remembers that he will be back in the cold weather eventually!!

The top photo is the draft for the weaving project I am doing and the bottom picture is the cloth or towels and what they look like woven. I really love this pattern and think they make pretty darn nice looking towels. Spent a lot of my time in the barn weaving today.

I am still waiting to get my grades from last semester and still haven't heard a thing. I hate the waiting game. I want to know now! I am very impatient, that is one of my down falls sometimes.

The New Year was brought in by my son and I. I made homemade pizza and we drank sparkling grape juice! I would of had the harder stuff but being as my son is not yet 21 I decided to drink with him and that is a great idea as I didn't have to worry about no headaches this morning! We actually were able to stay up until midnight and watch the ball drop in New York City. Hope you all have a wonderful New Year and of course I wish you the best of everything this coming year!

The son loves this homemade go cart! He has had more fun with this thing than anything else, I have to say though that he is getting a little to tall for it. How he scrunches his legs up enough to ride it is unbelievable!! I have even drove it myself and love it! I tell the hubby we need to make a track out back and buy a couple for fun. Good luck with that, he tells me! We still have the old tire swing and they still have a blast with that darn thing as you can well.

New Project

The top picture is a 16 yard warp that I am getting ready for the next weaving project that needs to be done by the time the family get together is on the 13th. The second picture is the design in the book that I will be doing, of course it will look a lot different woven into cloth than the picture does in the book. The last picture is the loom that the project will be going on. That was my job for the day. I also ended up putting plastic up on the windows in the weaving room in the barn. The wind blows a hundred miles an hour and boy does it get chilly up there. This year I decided to put plastic up and hope to cut down on the cold air seeping into the room.

The day was chilly and just a tad windy (like 40 mile an hour winds all day)! Hope you all had a great day.

New York City

Matt's Drill

This is one of the last jobs that the hubby drilled at and he had a wonderful view of New York City. He is now on a plane headed to New Orleans, LA. He is not happy about being on a plane. He would rather drive his company truck with all his tools! But you have to do what the company says and he is working!! He is very glad that he is not going down there in the middle of the summer months though! He is not one for the extreme heat. It is only supposed to be in the mid to upper 60's there. He also is going to be gone for at least three weeks. Good thing we don't do much for the New Year. I am going to have to bring in the New Year with the son this year.

Not calling for much snow for a while which is good. I hate getting snow storms when the hubby can't get home. But by the sounds of it he will be going to Ohio after he gets back or shortly there after and I will still have to contend with the snow. I at least have the wonderful son to help out. Good thing I am used to handling things on my own. That is one thing the hubby has taught me and that is how to take care of myself.

Hope you had a wonderful Christmas. I got a lot of new cloths and a new carhart vest and boy do I love that. I am not one for vests but I really like this one. Only one weaving project I did not get done but she understands and told me not to worry about it. (Thanks Inny!!) I am thinking of putting on another project of weaving for the family sibling get together in a few weeks. It will take some long hours and lots of weaving but I think I can do it being as I have no school until the 24th. I still have not gotten any final grades yet. I am hoping this week or early next week.

Christmas Plants

I didn't do a lot but I did decide to put some Christmas bulbs on my house plants!

We did the Audubon Bird Count today, I should say the hubby and his siblings did anyway. I went on the last part of the trip. It started out a very cloudy day but they did see some birds not a big variety of ones though.

Now we are home and enjoying the evening and waiting for tomorrow to come then it is baking pies and wrapping the last of the gifts for Christmas. Hope you all had a great day.

Lefsa (South View Farm style)

Lefsa is a Norweigen, flatbread and if you follow Far Side of Fifties blog she and her hubby also make these. My family started making these when my mom married my step dad. My step grandparents made them every year for Christmas along with oyster dressing. Now the hubby and I make them most years. We love them, they are made with (we use fresh mashed potatoes) instant potatoes, evaporated milk and butter and lots and lots of flour, but FSOF puts honey in hers and I think next year we will try that ourselves! She is right, everyone has their own way of making them. The hubby uses the griddle and I do the rolling out. It tooks us most of the day to do a batch. It is not a fast process, but our industrial mixer sure helped us this year with them. Hope you all have a great day.

I delivered my first set of towels today. I have all the towels woven and now I am in the process of finishing them up and this is the first set that I finished and delivered this afternoon. I still have fourteen left to do and then all done.

Tomorrow is the last day of school for this semester, yippy! I have three tests to do for tomorrow. Then hopefully I will have a good idea on what my grades will be until the official ones come in the mail after the first of the year.

Getting closer to being ready for the Christmas season. Still have plenty of shopping to do though and that is the worst part of the whole thing! I think the worst of everyone comes out when you are shopping.

No snow as of yet but I am hoping we get a little for Christmas, I personally love it when it is white outside for Christmas. Hope you all have a great evening.

Here I go again, no pictures, have found myself not having the time to take pictures.

We are getting rain and it is supposed to get cold and south and east of us are supposed to get some accumulation of snow. Hopefully it stay away from us.

Nothing much new on the home front. Thinking about finally getting a Christmas tree this weekend. We always get a fresh tree, no fake one for us. I think we have only had one fake tree in the 27 years we have been together. I just love the smell of a tree in the house. Not looking forward to trying to put away my nicknack's to make room for the Christmas stuff. That seems to be a chore in itself. I hate that they commercialize Christmas before Thanksgiving! I don't know about you all but by the time Christmas actually gets here, I am ready to put it away and be done with it.

Stooges, not three but four. I think they are all up to no good too! This was taken at Dad's eightieth birthday party and I tell you what, it was a very rowdy day.

Not much going on. The weather is still holding out so far and I had to do a speech in writing class and if I got an A on the speech I was done for the semester and didn't have to do the final. I did it!! I held an A in the class for the whole semester and now I am done with that class, now just three more to go. I am going to get out of having to do my Algebra final also because I have an A in that class also! No finals in Micro computers!!!! The only class left in my Business class and we shall see. That is my school news for now.

I have been pretty busy trying to get weaving done before Christmas and boy do I have a lot of work to do! Christmas is fast approaching and like always I am a leave it until last kind a gal. I do better under pressure ;) Hope you all have a good evening.

I am still Alive

I bet you all thought that I gave up on blogging. No, I haven't it just has been one of those things that school and weaving and of course the farm has taken a lot of my time and I find that I don't want to spend hours at the computer. When I am done for the day I really am too tired to do much of anything.

The livestock are doing good so far, no big issues. All except a week ago I brought the horses in the barn for the night and the boys happened to see one of the lights on in the barn and went to shut off the light and they walk in and what do they do? Step in horse __it! Turned the down stairs lights on and there is Annie roaming around the barn, someone, (we won't mention who) must of forgot to shut the stall door the right way! She got out and the feed bin lid was off and she was a munching away at the hay in the other stall. I don't think she ate the grain much because the level of the bin was pretty much the same. She didn't colic and her feet are good so, that was a good sign! Now we double check the latches!!!

The weather has been holding out pretty good so far, no snow and the daytime as been in the forties or fifties most of the time and at night down in the thirties. I like that real well, but we all know that is not going to last.

School has been going great, my brain has finally started functioning good. I have only two weeks left and this semester will be done and hopefully I will have no finals to do. Then a good month off!!! I just hope my brain stays in the school mode until I go back.

I don't know about you, but I think I am still full from Thanksgiving dinner. We did brave the horrible Black Friday crowds this morning but I have to say we only went to one store and that was tractor supply to get the hubby a gun safe. They had the gun safe on sale for 300 hundred dollars off the original price! That was the only store we did visit and the crowd wasn't too bad! I even got myself a new pair of boots (which makes two pair now!) Hope you all had a good day. The picture has nothing to do with what went on today it was one that I got from the archives and I thought it would be nice to see something else making pigs of themselves. Have a great evening.

We had sweet potatoes, scalloped corn (thanks Mom!) and of course turkey that was 23 pounds. I made pumkin pie, cherry pie and the husbands favorite mincemeat pie. We are defiantly full and gained a few pounds today. Then a wonderful sunset to end the day (the son took the picture of the sunset.) I hope you all had a wonderful day.

Yes, you got it. I went to buy some more wine the other day and came across this bottle! I had to buy it, I told the hubby it would make a great post. It was pretty darn good wine to, from my perspective that is. We had a party for the hubbies dad, he turned eighty last Thursday and we had a party at the house for him. Other than that the weekend was pretty quite. Didn't do much.

This was last night at sunset! We have snow this morning but we hardly have a dusting but I hear north of us they have a little bit more than we did, which is just fine with me but the thing is I have to drive in that direction this morning to get to school. We shall see, a little more chilly this morning. I think we have been pretty darn lucky with the weather this winter or fall which ever you want to call it. The thing is we usually get our snow storm in February. Hope all is good and have a great day!

Not much going on today, have school all day and then of course home and the regular farm things going on and the hubby went to look at a planer for his woodworking and hopefully he gets a good deal on one. He has been wanting one for a long time now.

Scarlet Runner Beans that is. I don't have the picture of the greenery and the red flowers that these little beans produce in the summer months. They produce beans also. We let them dry out and then take them out of the pods and we can replant them in the spring. They are edible if picked early. If you pick the beans they will keep flowering and making more bean pods. The bean itself is very pretty! We got a good crop this year and we are going to share with the hubbies sister as she don't have anymore for next year.I got this picture from the Internet. Hope you all had a great day.

Homemade beats bought

The hubby and son worked on building a new feed bunk this weekend. Before he added the hay rack above the bunk, we put the hay loose in the bunk and the cattle would just spread it all over the place especially over the ground. Then stomp on it and waste more than they ate. So now they have to work at it a little more and less goes on the ground! I think he did a pretty darn good job. I seem to be behind the eight ball a little, I should of taken before and after pictures.

Its Full!

Well, as you can see the wood is all sawed, split and stacked. You can see that the shed is nice and full, the shed is 16' x 18' by 7' high! It usually lasts all winter but by the time spring has arrived we would of made a pretty good dent in it. The best part is the mess is outside and not in the house.

Thank goodness it is Friday but the thing is the work is never done even if it is a weekend. I think we work harder on weekends than during the week. Hope you all have a great weekend!

Who's Barn ?

Here we go again, it is winter time and now instead of having only two tractors in MY barn we now have three! The hubby insists that this is my barn and I insist that he is full of you know what! The stalls are accessible, I made sure of that! I told the hubby that he should of made his barn first but he didn't listen and now I have to share mine. Good thing I love him as much as I do, of course he can say the same thing because he actually did pay for most of it ;)

I got my mid-term grades in the mail today and I have B's and A's!!! Yippy, makes me want to go out and celebrate! But I will wait until I am done with the semester before I do that. I will have a beer tonight though and toast to myself!

One of the things that got done over the weekend was the mail box!! I have been after the hubby to replace the old one now for two years, his excuse for not doing so was time, and of course the snow plow will just hit it and ruin it again why bother? So, I had bought a really cheap tin one and the hubby didn't like it because it wasn't big enough and wouldn't last. So, of course, we had to go out and buy another one that was bigger and we happen to find one that was bigger and made out of steel! Let the snow plow hit this one!!! Hope you all are doing good and I will be by to comment as soon as I get a chance.

Have lots of school work and of course the weaving that has to be done by Christmas. So, forgive me if I blog sporadically.

White and more white

This just happens to be the brilliant color of white that is coming down out of the sky. I was on the way home and it was raining from where I had left and not a half a mile from the house does the weather drop three degrees and it is snowing. Supposed to get our first hard frost tonight. We actually have freeze warnings out for it to get down to 29 degrees tonight. I am so not ready for this!!

Went and did my schedule for the spring semester. I thought I had a full schedule this semester, well next is even worse. I have five classes and will be at school everyday. I took Algebra again and decided that since I still had to take a math elective I might as well stick with Algebra and get it over with.

This is a picture from the archives. The daughter went to Boston and took this picture. It was quite a while ago. But I wanted to post and I hate posting with no pictures!

Not much is going on around here EXCEPT that they are calling for snow Thursday and possibly more on Saturday, even a little of accumulation! Yuck!! I am so not ready for that. I still need to get snow tires for the car and we have no four wheel truck and that I will miss! Only in the forties to boot!

Went to get my new gun today and I just love it. It is going to fit on my hip just perfect! I had to buy ammo and then this weekend I think I will be doing more target practicing if the weather allows that is.

Thursday is our day to schedule for our spring classes. Means that I will know what my classes are going to be and how many days I will be going to school and for how long! I did get an one hundred on the mid term essay for writing!!! I am still getting an A in algebra and my business class is a B+ and that lovely computer class is a C. I am hoping that I can bring that up in the next assignment and test!! I still have six weeks before the semester is up.

Fall

As you can see the leaves are pretty much done with the color of fall and now they are calling for snow towards the end of the week! We are supposed to get more of a chance come Saturday! Yes, I think the winter months are here to stay. Finally going to get down into the twenties also. I personally am never ready for winter, I hate the really cold weather but I guess it beats having 90 to 100 degree weather.

Had company over the weekend and we attempted to go fishing but it was rainy and not all that warm and of course we caught no fish :( Then sunday we went target shooting and had a blast (no pun intended ;)

We have been pretty busy the last month and the hubby and I both decided that next weekend we are taking the time and just stay home by ourselves and get ready for the up and coming winter. Hunting Season

As you can see the guys do more scouting out back to see if any deer tracks are around. This year they have decided to put hay wagons out in the field and stack some hay on them and make shields to hide them from the deer and hopefully they can see some out in the fields. The son likes to turkey hunt but no sounds or evidence of those either! They haven't been too lucky in the past years of getting anything. I always keep my fingers crossed for them but no luck yet. Maybe this will be the year. I have to still take my hunter safety course before I can go and hunt with them. I told the hubby I would go out and just sit and listen for him because sometimes he doesn't hear the deer until they are right up to him. I can hear a whole lot better and maybe I will hear one coming before he does and then he can be ready when it comes into sight.

West View

This is the western view from the farm. It has been chilly here but not really all that bad. The winds have been blowing pretty good and a lot of the leaves have been falling fairly quickly. We all know that winter is fast approaching. We have been trying to get things buttoned up before snow flies but I don't think anyone is ever ready for that no matter how you try!

I have had a hard time getting out to the barn to get my weaving done and of course my deadlines are fast approaching also! I have 10 towels to get done and one table runner to get done before Christmas. Now that is a word I hate thinking about! Everyone around here wants a laptop computer and the hubby wants a gun safe. Sounds like a pretty darn expensive holiday to me!

Other than the normal day to day things, not a lot has been going on. Had company a week ago. He was up from the city and never been on a farm and we took him target shooting with the guns and then the hubby also showed him our forge and let him make his own thing, which was a letter opener. He bought a rug from me to take home to his apartment. It was a very nice visit.

Sorry about the posts being so far apart. The hubby would like me to post more often but I tell him homework has to come first! He has been great with all the changes that have been going on. He has been very patient with me, (good thing)! Hope you all are doing good and getting ready for the wonderful season of winter!

The end of summer

We do still have some flowers, but they are starting to die off now as you can see. Not much going on around here and I have been pretty lax in taking pictures lately.

We lost Paws, one of our cats a couple of weeks ago now, she was hit by a car and we new eventually that would happen. She was our mouser, she would kill the mouse then drop it at our back door to let us know that she was doing her job! Our other cat, Cloe, doesn't do much of anything but be a pain in the neck!

This weekend is going to be very busy with trying to get all the summer things put away for the winter, like the boat, the fish pond etc.

We are going to bring the fish down into the basement and put them into a stock tank with a pump. We have a very warm basement because of the wood stove pumping the hot water to the basement.

New Loom / New Project

As you can see, I now have a loom that is larger and has more ways to make very pretty designs. This is the next set of towels that I am doing for my dentist! I think it is so awesome. I finally was able to get a start on the project. School has taken up so much of my time that it has been hard to get up into the barn. Things are getting easier now and so it doesn't seem to take as much of my time.

I have gotten my first test grades, and I am so proud of myself, in Algebra (the hardest). I got a 93 % on the test! Yippy! My business class I got an 85% which is still a B and the only class so far that I am not liking all that well and that is Micro-computers! The main problem is the teacher! He goes through things so fast and doesn't go back at all. I am hoping that I can at least keep my grade high enough to pass the class, because that is one of the required for my degree.

Other than all the lovely stuff, not a heck of a lot is going on around here. I did sell a rug and a set of towels over the weekend, which was very nice!

He loves to come over and get pets and just see what I am up too! He also loves to come over and crowd me when it comes to feeding time also. Its time for the hubby to clean out their pen but with all the rain it makes it a little hard to spread manure when the fields are soaked. The big guys are starting to look taller than the fence!

We went up to the gun show in Old Forge. The weather was gloomy and wet. Was not easy trying to get a good picture of everyone as they just did not want to cooperate! The daughter was home from college for the weekend and it sure was nice having her home for a few days! The bottom picture is just one of the many creeks we saw on the way up and the fall colors are not going to be as nice this year, as it has been pretty darn wet and a lot of the leaves have fallen. Bought another hand gun. I still have a ways before I am even with the hubby and his long rifles. Not much going on other than that. Had another load of logs come in yesterday and I will be posting pictures of how they come and how they are unloaded. Have a great evening.

You have always seen my towels and table runners. I had to show you the rag rugs that I also weave. These are fun to weave and very easy also. I wanted to give you an idea about all the things that I am able to weave. I plan on starting another blog that will have all my weaving projects only, but that will be a while yet. I want to get used to school first and get into the routine of school and things that have to be done on the farm and the weaving end. Then I will do the new blog. Another day on the farm

As you can see, it has been pretty foggy here in the mornings and the last few days it has been pretty warm. I know that those days are numbered though. They are calling for a high of 60 within the next couple of days. I can't believe that it is towards the end of September already!

I have to go and get the hubby and the son their hunting license in the next couple of days so they can have a chance to get a doe permit this year. The dead line for the that is October first, I better hop to it or the hubby will have my head on a silver platter!

School is going good, so far, on all of my homework I have A's and I have my first test tomorrow, so wish me luck!

HoneyBee ZY

Well, as you can see, we have our first crop of honey! The son and hubby worked on harvesting the honey yesterday! Now all I have to do is find a place to store it all and we will be in business but of course if he keeps giving it away I won't have to worry about finding a big place for it all!

It is sooo good! Having one bee hive left, I am surprised we harvested as much as we did. I don't think we really need to have more than that, but I have a feeling that now the hubby has gotten honey he will buy more bees!

You try cooking supper when you have a huge extractor sitting on your kitchen counter. A big pan of water being used as a steamer to melt down the honey sitting on the only cook stove you have. Then add three people in a small kitchen trying to get around each other to get things done. That was not a pretty sight! It sure was worth all the headache of having your kitchen taken over by a hubby that would prefer not to be in the kitchen when it comes to cooking time!

Still no pictures, just narrating what I did today. First of course, I had Algebra and that is the only class I have on Thursday and that went pretty good. Then she allowed us extra credit if we went to an assembly about driving and texting, they had guest speakers from Texas where their daughter had been texting on the way to school and she rolled her truck and she unfortunately did not survive and no other cars involved thank goodness. It was a very good assembly now if everyone in the assembly listened is another thing. They told the people if they still want to text while driving to make sure they have life insurance.

Then went to take the computer to have our windows registered because when they fixed it the last time we got a notice that our windows was not genuine! While that was going on I went all over town looking for a nice dress to wear to the hubbies company dinner at the country club and do you think I could find a store that has anything remotely suitable and that would fit me, NOOOOOOO. I gave up about an hour into the looking.

Then went to get the grocery shopping done and at least that wonderful chore is done for the week!! Now it is around 6 by the time I get home and get things put away.

Weaving

No pictures today, but just to do a post, I will tell you what my day consisted of. First, I had NO SCHOOL! Tuesday's are my day of no school and Thursday's I have only one class! The rest of the week I have full days. I am finally getting to see the end of the tunnel as far as algebra goes. Things seem to be getting a little more easier.

I did house work that I haven't done in the last couple of days then I actually got out to the barn and started the next projects out on the looms. I have four orders to be filled before Christmas and that is a lot of work but fun! I have five sets of towels to get done then my best friend has asked me to do her a table runner! I am actually excited to have this work. I am even making towels for my Dentist! I will have to post my newest loom after I have my projects up and going.

That has pretty well taken up my day for today. I hope you all had a good day.

What Weekend?!!

It was a pretty busy weekend. I did our sweet corn, then it was off to can tomatoes. Then I spent more time on Algebra homework! I ask you"When will I ever use it again?" ! Out of all classes that is the one that is giving me a headache, 24/7! I think it took me over 2 hours to do a total of 17 questions! I will be totally glad when the end of 15 weeks get here and lets just hope I make it that long! That is when my first semester is done and off to a whole new set of courses!

I have wanted to go riding for the last week and I still have not found the energy or the time to take to be with the horses! I think Annie and Sirocco think I forgotten about them! You will have to forgive me for the sparse posts. It will and is taking me sometime to get back into the school work mode again. It is not like I have been out of school for the last thirty years! Sorry to keep harping on the school thing but I have to tell you that is the thing that is taking up most of my time. It will be worth it but just so you know I have not forgotten you all! I still take time to visit your blogs even if I don't take the time to comment!

I put up 27 quarts of tomatoes and 16 quarts of corn. Thanks to the lovely son, I did not have to do the picking all I had to do is the canning! The hubby mowed down the rest of our hay field, and it unfortunately is not going to make very good hay so we are leaving it lay for this year. I wish I would of thought of it sooner, I would of seen if anyone would of wanted free hay down in Texas, all they would of had to do is come get it. We have way to much hay for our facilities so a lot of it we end up leaving out in the field or putting it on hay wagons and letting it sit and feeding the livestock off of the wagons.

Yes, yellow flowers that we saw when we went to the state park back home.

Rain again! Hopefully this time it knows when to quit and we don't have to worry about more flooding. Two of the roads that we travel on all the time around these parts have been closed because of flood damage and no opening in sight! Have had to go back roads up and over the mountains to get to school, which is OK for this time of year but when snow flies it will not be fun.

I guess that is an inconvenience I can handle! I would rather go out of my way than worry about trying to get a place to live in after the last one was taken from high powered water!

I could not believe how these pictures turned out. I was trying to show how bad some of the flooding was even after six days. Where you see water was a field before all the rain and the flooding.

We were coming back from getting feed for the horses and I was snapping pictures as we were going by. When I down loaded them onto the computer, I was amazed at how they looked! Personally I thought they came out spectacular!

By now you all know that I am going to school and one of my classes that I have to take is introduction in writing (because when I took the placement test my writing score was not good.) It is a class that is not even one of the ones that I have to have to get my degree. So, this last part is for my very lovable mother-in-law. Mom, I don't mind if you pick apart my writing as it will help me. (I hope) So, start picking!

This is Galena, Illinois. As you can see there are huge flood gates for the town. A couple of weeks before we had visited it had flooded and the building in the last picture was flooded in the whole basement and right up to the doors but did not get into the top floors at all. They close the gates of course when the river floods. We had a good time playing tourist and buying food like gourmet smoked salts, popcorn, and even stopped for ice cream cones. This is the last of the vacation trip pictures!

Now, Connie at Far Side of Fifty asked me lots of questions regarding my school experience. Well, first hour class is Principles of business, and the teacher is nice and it is going good. The second class I have is beginning Algebra and let me tell you that is going to take some getting used to even though Math was one of my favorite subjects in high school I was one that never was all that good with angles and guess what, that is the first thing she starts with (just lovely) but I have to say that I pay more attention now than I did in high school!! Then I have Introduction in Writing and I sure hope this helps my writing skills by the time I am done because I sure do need it! The teacher in the class is my favorite because he has a great since of humor and makes the class go a whole lot faster! Then my last class of the day is Micro computers and I do like that class, I am defiantly learning things about the computer that I never understood before that is for sure! The first day of classes wasn't too bad and yes, I sure do get turned around in the building sometimes because my since of direction never has been worth a darn! Then they had to change the room of one of my classes so I had to find where the heck it went to and only had 2 minutes left to find it and I still ended up being a minute or two late for the class but it was for the teacher that had the sense of humor! Kept pretty much to myself the first couple of days, it is very hard for me to just mingle with anyone, I have always been a very shy person. The kids do seem to be very courteous for the most part! I did sit in the front for three of my classes and the other one I am in the second row of the class. I tell you, I never remember books being so darn heavy! I think my shoulders are going to fall off before I am done. It is hard to believe that you spend all that money on books and in three of my classes I use the CD in the packet but I doubt that the book is used for the whole semester and the other class he said that everything is done on the computer and that he never uses the book (but that book only cost me 35 dollars so that wasn't so bad! I sure can tell you that my brain will be put to the test! I just hope I can remember all this stuff they are teaching. I will know once I take my first tests!

Driving Lessons

The high point of the trip to Illinois was the boys got to drive an en loader. Friends of ours own and operate a rock quarry and they each were able to drive with instructions from the boss!

Well the first day of school was a rainy and wet day and very hectic, I am over whelmed but I will give myself at least a couple of weeks to try to get the hang of things. Talk about feeling like a bowl in a china shop! Hope you all have a great evening.

Big difference from the mountains of New York and the corn belt of Illinois! I miss the corn fields of home but I have to say that I did miss the mountains while we were gone. They each have their beauty and as I told the hubby as long as he is with me any place we live together is home!

Today is orientation at the college, not nervous yet but I bet by the time I get there tomorrow for the first day of classes I will be a nervous wreck. Hope you all have a wonderful day!

The Mighty Mississippi

This is the Mississippi River at outlook point in the state park at Savanna , Illinois. We took the son's best friend with us this time and one of the best things is to go look at the river from the park.

We had a great time, visited with the family and friends that we haven't seen in four years and it was a short trip but was very nice. Only one day of rain and two very hot days in the 90's but we survived and the sun was shining and that is always good because now we are back to the rains and watching out for more flooding which is not very good. Just a little breezy!

I wasn't in an area where we could take pictures of flooding but some of our major highways that we travel are closed and our county is under emergency. We went to get diesel fuel last night for the generator and as we got to the one exit that we get off of, was just closing the thruway past that exit. We were able to get fuel and head home before the highway was completely closed. Not hearing a lot about the flooding around us, lots said in the coastal areas of course but not inland!
We were out of power all day yesterday except for a couple of hours. We did get our power back around nine last night. We did get around 6 to 8 inches of rain.

Rain

Well, it started raining last night and it hasn't stopped yet! Not for sure how much we have gotten yet. The storm is not over. We didn't get too much wind where we are in the beginning but the winds have picked up and we did lose power for most of the mid morning and early afternoon! We do have power at this moment, for how long, who knows. I am just glad that we live further north west than closer to the city and just less than an hour south east of us they are getting it pretty bad with the flooding and we are on flood warnings right now. I am taking pictures but not all that impressive at the home front. I have pretty much stayed put inside the house today. Didn't take long this morning to get soaked when we went out to do the chores and I even had on the duster and the hat. Will post all about it tomorrow. The hurricane predictions where no where near as bad as they said it was going to be.

Storm

I had to add the horses into this post, its been awhile. As you can see the skies are not looking so great, and as you all know by tomorrow we will be into some nasty weather! We took the daughter to college yesterday and spent the rest of the day getting groceries and feed for the livestock. Today we will be getting things around the farm ready for the rain and the wind. Our area is looking for 60 + winds and above 5 inches of rain.

We have been watching the news and the track of the storm coming up the coast and keep wondering how bad we will be getting the storm. We are inland a ways but we are still close enough that we are going to get some of the bad stuff from this hurricane. The hubby keeps telling me every so often that we are going to get hammered and I keep saying I know dear, I know and of course you worry about the buildings and the livestock coming through this storm, I debate if I should leave the horses out and they can get into the run in shed or put them in the barn in the stalls where they will stay dry but if the winds get bad enough the hubby says that it doesn't matter where they are. I don't like them odds!

We did postpone our trip to Illinois until after the storm, being as we have to worry about power going out and flooding if the sump pump isn't working but hopefully we will be going towards the middle of next week.

Hello, would you believe I just came to say hello? Oh, alright, I will be your friend for life you would sneak me one of those peanuts that those guys were handing out last night, I won't tell them you gave me another one.

I was a sucker for that pitiful face! I had to throw out a couple, I mean he came right up to the patio door and scratched at the door just to get my attention yesterday when I was cleaning. I new they had the peanuts stashed up on top of the frig!

School

Well, Friday is the day the daughter has move in day at the college up north and it will be her first time being away from home for any extended period of time! We will miss her but I think she will be missing the boyfriend and the girlfriend more than mom and dad! I will miss her but I have to say it will be nice to be down to just one kid in the house for a while.

I start school the seventh of September and I am looking forward to it but I know I will be nervous the first day, of course. I am ready for it though, I have my books and school I D and parking permit and my brain is another story, I don't know if that is ready yet, but I sure will let you know!! I have had lots of second thoughts about going I tell you but in the long run it will be good to use the old noggin again.

We are off to Illinois Friday after we drop the daughter off at school. We are making a hurried trip out home because it has been a few years since I have been back and I didn't want to wait another year because next year we have some awesome plans for travel. Our 25th wedding anniversary is next year and I told the hubby I wanted to go west and we are going to meet one of my favorite bloggers and visit his part of the country for a couple of weeks! I will take lots of pictures when I go home this next week and if I can get next to a computer in that time I will try to post but if not I will post the rest of this week then it might be few days before I get another post up.

It is pretty bad that the men's pad down in the city is cleaner than my own house and I am the one that cleans it. I tell the hubby I don't mind coming down and cleaning the house for the guys because it is so much easier to clean than my own! They don't have the clutter like Nick knacks, tons of cub boards, books, pictures, paper, and teenage kids! Matter of fact they have hardly anything in the house that the rooms actually echo! I brought down pictures to put on the walls just to cut down on the echo and even rugs! They need more but I refrain as it is a man pad and not women, so I won't intrude (to much).

I tell the hubby I think I will rent a dumpster and start the heave ho at home but then I start to go through the house and decide that there really isn't too much I want to get rid of. I guess I will just have to put up with the clutter. I figure, if no one likes our clutter they better not come to my home and they better make an appointment to see me if the come to see my house! So for now I will enjoy cleaning someone else's house that take only a few hours instead of days :) As you can tell I am back down cleaning house before I start college in a couple of weeks.

Woodsmen Show

We were disappointed in the show, because a lot of the events didn't happen until late in the afternoon, and we didn't stay for them. They were just starting to get things ready around 2 in the afternoon. We did go around and see the vendors and as you can see we saw our dream sawmill. They had a lot of wood carvings that were pretty darn neat as you can see in the last picture! Don't mind the person, I have no idea who it was. The dragon was pretty neat though, I personally loved the bench and I saw another one that was even better and the hubby said he could make me one and we shall see how long that takes along with all the other things that are on the honey do list that needs to get done. Finally last series

It was a pageant of steam but I have to say that I think this big ole machine captured the crowd the most! We stood there for quite some time watching him. The hubby of course has always liked big machinery anyway. Today we went to a woodsmen show and was kind of disappointed in it because not a lot of demo's were going on at all just a lot of sawmills and saws and woodworking equipment. We would love to get a bigger sawmill but they are pretty pricey. It would also be nice to aquire a wood processing machine that cuts your logs into wood pieces for the wood stove. I didn't take a whole lot of pictures at all but I did take a video of the sawmill that we would love to have. I will post that tomorrow for you.

Threshing. An ancient process used to separate grain from straw. First invented by Scottish mechanical engineer Andrew Meikle for use in agriculture. It was invented (c. 1784)

Early threshing machines were hand-fed and horse powered. They were the size of an upright piano. Later machines were steam powered, driven by a portable engine or traction engine. In 1834 John Avery and Hiram Abial Pitts devised significant improvements to a machine that automatically threshes and separated grain from chaff. Avery and Pitts were granted a patent in the United States on December 29, 1837. The last picture is of the straw being baled after it has gone through the threshing process. If you notice in the first video, the straw is coming out from the threshing machine at the top and the grain is coming down the chute from the side of the machine and they had bags at the end of the chute that would catch the grain and then tied them shut. Sunday's post was the grain that was being bagged.

Rumely Tracter. We went to the Pageant of Steam show up in Canindagua, NY yesterday and it was a fantastic show, as you will find out because that is what I will be posting most of next week. I actually took over 160 pictures and video's yesterday of the show.

We went to our favorite farm last weekend. One of the things we always do is go for a walk if the weather permits, and it was a little drizzly but we went anyway and the hubby was nice enough to carry the umbrella so I could take the camera and take pictures as we walk. We saw the butterfly in my last post on the same day we took the walk. One of the best things about this is all the fences are in and you have lots of different pastures to explore.

It was even better because it was just the two of us with all the time we wanted to just walk and enjoy!

Old Forge

Went to a tourist town for a gun show and we passed this restaurant with a plane sticking out of its roof. Then lots of traffic as you can see. Went under an over pass that was pretty neat. Not much going on but it was a nice trip to take for the day.

Next weekend we are going to a steam show up north that covers 100 acres. I will have lots of pictures for you.

My Morning

Decided to go sit by the pond this morning when I put the dogs out for their morning bathroom rituals! It was not to hot or to cold to sit out and enjoy the morning while they did their business and it is so quite and peaceful first thing in the morning!

Then I go in the house and it is time to get the day going, chores first then it is a day of running, we are going up to Old Forge to a gun show, then off to a book signing. We are lucky enough that we have a star writer in the family and we all got a copy of his book (Driving Excellence) by Mark Aesch! I didn't think I would like reading the book but he put quite a bit of humor into writing it and I really did enjoy reading it and learning a few things about business practices!

We got up to nice sunny skies and the day before had predicted no rain on Wednesday, should of known that the weather man can't predict the weather right to save his sole! It started out nice and sunny and by the time we got ready to bale hay this is what the sky was looking like and of course you have no choice but to bale as much as you possibly can before it hits! We did get around 200 bales in, which isn't much really and we still had hay left laying on the ground when the rain hit and it was a good thing I had went to town to get tarps to cover the hay wagons because we did not even have time to unload.

The hubby taught me how to rake the hay, I have baled and mowed but never raked, so, now I know how to rake. Everyone says raking is easy but I don't know if I like it as well as mowing. The son was on the back of the wagon to try to stack as many bales as possible without having to stop and change wagons. I love working on the farm but I have to say that it is great to have the son big and old enough to start helping with some of the bigger jobs!

I Have around a dozen frogs in the pond, of course along with the fish. It is pretty busy around here, with garden and of course with all the farm things going on it doesn't leave much time to do much of any thing else. You gotta do what you can while the nice weather lasts.

These little creatures still amaze me! They sound like a rocket when they zoom past your head not 5 inches away and then if you get more than one that is fighting over the feeders then you really have a traffic jam! Can't believe something so small can make such a noise! They let me know this morning that they are down on feed. Hope you all have a wonderful day!

Well, yes, I am still posting vacation pictures. We have the flag we bought for the porch of the camp, our fishing boat for the week, our morning coffee on the fire and of course breakfast omelet! I was a little lax in taking pictures of the cast iron meals that week and you can bet that I did not cook on the stove in the camp, it was all done on the fire and I did the prep work and Matt did the actual cooking but it was all done in the cast iron all week! We ate pretty darn good! I will make this the last post of vacation and I will get back to the farm stuff . Hope you all are having a good weekend.

Our daughter, Tawny, turned 21 today. She called us down in NJ to tell us she got her Drivers License that took the restriction for being under 21 off her license and she is now considered an adult! Can't believe that she is 21. Where have the years gone. She goes off to University next month too. I will never forget the time she decided to get up and personal with the cattle in the feed lot. We had a cattle shed that was around 40 by 70 and we usually had around 140 cattle in the yard. I had ran in the house to get the phone and she had to of been 4 years old at the time and when I came back out she wasn't in the yard and I kept yelling for her and the next thing I hear is this little voice saying "I'm in here, mom!" and the shed was lower than the yard and you could look down into the shed from the ground on one side and there she was looking up at me with over 100 steers looking at her like what in the world is this little person doing in here! I tell you I about had a heart attack, but she sure wasn't scared a bit and I had to tell her to come over to the side of the shed so I could lean over and grab her from the shed up to the ground. Now I can look back and laugh because she was so small compared to the cattle and she just looked up at me like it was no big deal if she went to play with the steers!! Another lovely story is of when I went to make supper and she was in her room playing and I hadn't heard a word from her and went to see what she was up to and I look in the bedroom and there she was with her dad's shaving cream spraying cream all over her room and I can tell you that was a lovely mess to clean up!!
