I had to add the horses into this post, its been awhile. As you can see the skies are not looking so great, and as you all know by tomorrow we will be into some nasty weather! We took the daughter to college yesterday and spent the rest of the day getting groceries and feed for the livestock. Today we will be getting things around the farm ready for the rain and the wind. Our area is looking for 60 + winds and above 5 inches of rain.
We have been watching the news and the track of the storm coming up the coast and keep wondering how bad we will be getting the storm. We are inland a ways but we are still close enough that we are going to get some of the bad stuff from this hurricane. The hubby keeps telling me every so often that we are going to get hammered and I keep saying I know dear, I know and of course you worry about the buildings and the livestock coming through this storm, I debate if I should leave the horses out and they can get into the run in shed or put them in the barn in the stalls where they will stay dry but if the winds get bad enough the hubby says that it doesn't matter where they are. I don't like them odds!
We did postpone our trip to Illinois until after the storm, being as we have to worry about power going out and flooding if the sump pump isn't working but hopefully we will be going towards the middle of next week.

Sure hope you don't get hit too hard.
I don't know if you will get this in time, but here in Florida, we leave the horses out during a hurricane. We leave the barn doors/gates open so that they can get inside if they want, but they seem more at ease to be able to follow their natural instincts if the wind makes them feel threatened. They do tend to run around a lot in the storms which can be frightening to us, but I think it is better than hurting a foot or leg kicking at a gate to get out. I just have to trust that they will be okay.
We also have plastic collars that we put on them that have our contact infomration on it should the fence be knocked down or they get out. Some people tie the plastic ear tags for cattle into the mane for the same purpose. Good luck. Will be thinking about your and your beautiful horses.
I hope everything will be okay!! Praying for all those folks being affected by Irene in the next few days. It is hot here, in the 90's and sunny. Could actually stand a day of rain!
